The Suffolk Punch Horse was once believed to descend from the medieval "Great Horse", which was brought to England by William the Conqueror. They were originally developed for agricultural work specifically in Norfolk and Suffolk in the East of England. The farmers bred them specifically for farm life because of their stamina and willingness to work, so not many of them were initially on the market. They were also very often used in drawn competitions.
